Speaking on RedMen TV, Neil Jones has been discussing Liverpool’s pursuit of Enzo Fernandez and one relationship that may help the Reds win this race.

Indeed, the Reds have been linked with Fernandez for a few weeks now, and while Jones wasn’t able to say whether or not a deal is in the pipeline, he did state that Julian Ward has a very good relationship with Benfica’s president, Rui Costa.

Ward actually spent time in Portugal working for the FA, and according to Jones, he became close with Costa during his time in that role.

Ward close with Costa

The journalist shared what he knows about Ward and his friendship with the Benfica president amid links to Fernandez.

“At the age of 21 he’s a player of physicality, dynamism, quality, international pedigree now. It’s from a club we know Liverpool have a good relationship with,” Jones said.

“Rui Costa, it’s funny you mention him, I know Julian Ward is on his way out, but he has a good relationship with Julian Ward. I’ve heard Julian speak about Rui Costa and their conversations in the past, not about players, but Julian was involved with the Portuguese FA so it’s that sort of thing. It ticks a lot of boxes there.”

Helpful

In order to win a transfer race like this you need to have a few tricks up your sleeve.

Much like every industry, sometimes in football it’s about who you know rather than what you know, and Ward’s friendship with Costa may help Liverpool land Fernandez.

Factor in that the Reds’ move for Darwin Nunez this summer was rather seamless and the Portuguese giants may be more than happy to do some business with the Reds once again.
