Aberdeen legend Duncan Shearer can understand why Lewis Ferguson wants to leave Pittodrie amid interest from Rangers and Watford, telling the Press and Journal that his ‘head has been turned’.
Watching on as former Dons stars Scott Wright and Ryan Jack lifted the Scottish Premiership title at Ibrox, 21-year-old Ferguson obviously feels that he too can achieve a lot more away from the club where he made his name.
The dynamic midfielder handed in a transfer request earlier this week.
Aberdeen wasted no time making their stance clear, however, insisting that they were ‘greatly disappointed’ to learn of Ferguson’s desire to leave while hitting out at an ‘insulting’ £2 million offer from Watford.
According to the Sun, Rangers are battling the Premier League newcomers for the nephew of legendary former captain Barry Ferguson.
While Shearer would love to see Aberdeen’s most exciting talent stay put, he understands why young Lewis might have his heart set on a fresh start elsewhere.
“I can only think Ferguson’s head has been turned by the bid from Watford. He clearly feels, after three years, he has served his apprenticeship with the club and it is time to move on,” said Shearer.

“I can understand how Ferguson feels. He is looking at Watford, a club which has been promoted to the Premier League and he will be thinking this is his chance to play in the biggest league in the world.
“Aberdeen and Ferguson have been good for each other but I can sympathise with him.
“He’ll be looking at this as his chance to make the step up to the EPL and might be wondering if that chance will come his way again which is why he has put the transfer request in.”
Shearer points out that, with three years left on Ferguson’s contract at Pittodrie, Aberdeen hold all the cards.
If they do sell, you can guarantee that it will be for a lot more than £2 million.
