Ralf Rangnick has been speaking to the media about Paul Pogba, with Newcastle said to be interested in the Manchester United maestro.
Interestingly, the German basically confirmed that the Frenchman will be leaving Old Trafford this summer, but for a late shock.
What’s the story?
Well, Rangnick revealed that Pogba is unlikely to sign a new contract, and with his current terms expiring in June, will soon be gone for good.
The Manchester Evening News quote him as saying: “He won’t be available for the game tomorrow and most likely not for the other four upcoming games. And as it seems right now, he will not renew his contract. It’s most likely that he won’t be here anymore next season.”
It comes after The Sun revealed that Newcastle are interested in signing the 29-year-old this summer, as they aim to spend their newfound riches.
Of course, Pogba would be available for free, but as is the norm with free transfers, the Magpies would be expected to offer a large salary due to the fact no transfer fee is involved.
The World Cup winner already earns £290,000-a-week, so realistically, Newcastle might have to pay over £300,000-a-week to lure him to Tyneside.
Newcastle should avoid Paul Pogba
Turning down the chance to sign Pogba on a free transfer seems like a ridiculous thing to do, but we believe Newcastle should ignore him.
It has been years since the Manchester United No.6 delivered an impressive run of form, as opposed to the odd good game every now and again.
Pogba would also be more of a vanity signing than a player Newcastle actually need, as Eddie Howe’s midfield looks quite settled with Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton starring.
According to The Telegraph, José Mourinho also once called him a “virus” in the dressing room, which Howe especially doesn’t need after creating a bubbly atmosphere around the squad.
