Arsenal dropped points from a winning position yet again, this time against Tottenham in the derby. Mikel Arteta’s side took the lead through a stunner from Alexandre Lacazette before an individual mistake and a set-piece gave Spurs the win.
The victory puts Tottenham ahead of Arsenal in the league table. That is a huge blow to Arsenal’s European ambitions with just three games left in the season.
Both managers had a lot of nice things to say about each other before the game. Mourinho claimed pre-game that Arteta had improved Arsenal which is some compliment for the Gunners boss just a few months into his first job.
Mourinho appreciated Arteta’s tactics post-game too and the Arsenal boss has reiterated his admiration for the experienced Portuguese.
Arteta said: “Thank you [for his praise on it being a tactical battle], I can see what he’s trying to do and look he wins again. It’s two different styles. He manages really well and has a really good team behind him. I said before that he always finds a way to win.” (Football London, 19:02)
Mourinho has always been a pain to Arsenal fans, both on and off the pitch. The Spurs boss’ previous record against the Gunners is brilliant too and sadly for Arteta, he couldn’t change that.
Arsenal dominated the possession, especially in the second half. The Gunners had a few chances that they failed to convert too – something that Arsenal fans have been used to against Mourinho’s teams of the past.

That’s now 15 points dropped from a winning position for Arsenal since Arteta’s appointment, the most in the Premier League in that period. (Orbinho)
That’s 21 points from a winning position since the start of the season, only West Ham have a worse record in the league. (Opta)
Arsenal’s chances of European football next season is hanging by a thread now. Their upcoming games are no easy task either with Liverpool coming to the Emirates next.
Aston Villa and Watford, who are still fighting for survival, are dangerous sides to face in this stage of the season and Arteta will have to find a way to get the points against the three sides to have any chance of making it into Europe next season.
