Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Harry Maguire to leave the ‘circus’ of Manchester United and join Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Over the weekend, the 30-year-old was stripped of the captain’s armband at Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag making his feelings clear that the club’s big-money defender has no future at Old Trafford.

Former Aston Villa striker Agonlahor slammed how Harry Maguire has been treated, as he backed him to leave by dropping Tottenham as a possible destination and how he ‘starts’ for the London club, as he told talkSPORT Breakfast (18/07/23 at 6:30 am).

Spurs are looking for centre-backs this summer after producing disasterclass after disasterclass last season.

Goals weren’t an issue for the club last season, even with Son Heung-min having an off campaign, but the defence was all over the shop and it now needs refreshing.

For Agonlahor, he thinks that Postecoglou probably needs ‘four centre-halves’ ahead of the new season, as he backed Maguire to be one of those names.

“Harry Maguire, for me, is a top centre-half,” said Agbonlahor. “I don’t like the way he gets treated by Manchester United fans and sheep on social media – if I am him, then I am leaving the circus.

“He starts in that Spurs defence – There are a lot of teams that are sorted, centre-back wise. Liverpool with Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Matip and Gomez. For teams that aren’t sorted with centre-halves, I think he will play. Spurs, for instance, they probably need four centre-halves.”

Would Maguire suit Postecoglou’s style?

The answer is probably no because the former Celtic boss wants his backline, including the goalkeeper, to be brave on the ball and play in a way that would open that door of big risk.

Maguire, as he proves with England, needs a team and style that sits back, absorbs pressure and then hits teams on the counter.

Like Spurs tried and failed to do with Antonio Conte last season, so if they were to push for the 57-cap England international, then it would be a surprise.
