Michael Carrick has been linked with the managerial role at Tottenham Hotspur, but his former Old Trafford boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed the Middlesbrough manager to eventually take charge of Manchester United.

Michael Carrick linked with Tottenham Hotspur role

Carrick played for both Tottenham and Manchester United, and the former England international midfielder is now in charge of Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Boro have reached the Championship playoffs this season and stand a chance of winning promotion to the Premier League.

Earlier this month, 90min reported that Tottenham have an eye on Carrick.

Spurs have reportedly been impressed by the 41-year-old former Manchester United caretaker-manager and are keeping tabs on his progress at Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough boss backed for Manchester United manager’s job

Former United manager Solskjaer has now backed Carrick to eventually take charge of the Red Devils.

The Englishman was Solskjaer’s assistant at Old Trafford, and the 50-year-old Norwegian believes that Carrick will eventually take charge of Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag is in charge of the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners at the moment.

Solskjaer said about Carrick to The Athletic: “I mean this with my whole heart: I’m sure he will be the manager of Manchester United one day.

“Michael is class, from top to bottom. Integrity, loyalty, respect, knowledge; he’s got absolutely everything.

“I hope we do well with Erik, really hope so, and when he goes that Michael has had enough years for the club to say, ‘Come back, Michael, because we need you’.”

Future success

In our view, Michael Carrick could manage Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the future.

If the Englishman did not get Middlesbrough promoted, then Spurs could try for him.

If Carrick did well as Tottenham manager, then in the future United could come for him.

Now, of course, Ten Hag is doing extremely well at Old Trafford at the moment, but you never know what could happen in the future.
