Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to react after Phil Hay revealed that Lewis O’Brien is set to sign a new contract with Huddersfield.

What’s the story?

Well, The Athletic’s Leeds correspondent has provided an update on the 22-year-old, after he was heavily linked with a move to Elland Road.

The Sun claimed that Crystal Palace and Leeds were very keen to sign the Huddersfield No.8 over the summer.

It was even said that O’Brien preferred a move to Yorkshire over a switch to south London.

Now, however, the midfielder looks ready to commit his future to the Terriers, who he has made 89 appearances for.

O’Brien emerged from Huddersfield’s academy, so he clearly has an affinity with, and a soft spot for, the club.

Should Leeds go back in for Lewis O’Brien?

In our view, Leeds should go back in for O’Brien.

He has started the season well with one goal and one assist in six Championship outings so far, and looks to be improving with each game.

Nowadays – as some fans below state – contracts do not mean as much as they used to.

For all we know, the deal could include an affordable release clause for Leeds, and would prevent a repeat of what happened in the summer.

The Daily Mail believe Leeds bid £3m, which was rejected.

Eventually, Huddersfield Chairman Phil Hodgkinson revealed Leeds bid four times, with the Terriers rejecting £13m before Victor Orta gave up (BBC).

A new contract for O’Brien may not look like good news at first, but it could give him a bit of wriggle-room in an attempt to leave Huddersfield in future.

For now, let’s see what the Leeds fans on Twitter have been saying in response to Hay’s tweet…
