Peter Schmeichel told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (05/05/21 at 10:00 pm) that Tottenham-linked Sergio Ramos ‘wasn’t his normal self’ as Real Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea.
After missing several weeks of action through injury and COVID, Ramos was named in the starting XI, as Madrid struggled to lay a glove on Chelsea, who join Manchester City in an all-English European final.
One thing is for sure, Ramos, who is expected to leave this summer amid those Tottenham links, was off-colour and off-the-pace at Stamford Bridge.
From struggling to read and cope with Chelsea’s counter-attacks to losing aerial battles to the likes of Kai Havertz, it was a night of struggle for the trophy-laden player.
And whilst Schmeichel understood why Ramos started and played at the Bridge last night, the Manchester United legend thinks he had a night to forget.
“He charges out, leaving three against one and that lead to the first goal,” said Schmeichel. “I don’t think he would normally do that. He would read the situation much better than that.
“There were a couple of other situations, which led to Chelsea chances, where he wasn’t his normal self. I thought it was a big chance to play him, especially after how well they defended last week.
“But you know, it’s Sergio Ramos. It’s your captain and your talisman. Of course, you are going to take that chance (and play him).”

Hora 25 Deportes has claimed that Ramos will depart Madrid this summer, with his name being linked with Tottenham.
Nothing should be made of Ramos’ performance last night because he had hardly played and was coming up against a team that has been near-on faultless since Thomas Tuchel walked through their doors.
But with Tottenham already having an ageing Real Madrid player on their books, albeit he is expected to return to Spain in the summer, it will be a surprise if they push for Ramos’ signature.
Plus, with no permanent manager at the helm in North London, at this moment in time, it’s going to be pretty difficult luring those top players to the club.
