Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Tim Sherwood has been discussing Pep Guardiola and how he almost signed for Spurs during his playing days.

Sherwood was discussing potential podcast guests with Sam Allardyce, and he had a little joke about how Guardiola and Allardyce would have an interesting conversation.

This led to Allardyce telling a story of how he almost signed Guardiola as a player for Tottenham Hotspur, and, interestingly, Sherwood has a similar story about Pep almost joining Spurs at one point.

Guardiola almost signed for Tottenham

Sherwood and Allardyce spoke about Guardiola.

“I don’t know if you knew, but Sam had a conversation with Pep about potentially signing him at Bolton so maybe we can,” Allardyce’s co-host said.

“Yeah, when I was a player, it must have been around the same time because when I was a player at Tottenham he was linked to come to play for Tottenham, but I was there and he wasn’t good enough,” Sherwood said.

Could’ve had a knock-on

Of course, Guardiola is better known as a player than a manager these days, but perhaps Spurs could have gotten their hands on him as a coach if he was in the building as a player.

Let’s not forget, in the late 90s and early 2000s, Spurs were all over the place when it came to managerial appointments, and perhaps if Guardiola was already there, Tottenham would have taken a punt on the Spaniard years before he made his name at Barcelona.

Of course, that is all pie in the sky, but it certainly wouldn’t have hurt Spurs if they had an existing relationship with arguably the best manager of all-time as he was emerging in the coaching game.
