Paul Merson told Sky Sports that he was wowed by how ‘lightning quick’ Gareth Bale was during Tottenham’s win over the weekend.

Spurs recorded a deserved three points against Burnley with the Bale of old showcasing himself to the world and netting a brace.

The fact that Jose Mourinho opted to start Bale from the off helped his cause because it allowed him to follow up and be rewarded for strong performances in previous weeks.

But during one moment of Tottenham’s win against Burnley, Bale knocked the ball past Charlie Taylor and put his foot down on his accelerator.

Merson was seriously impressed by that moment and the speed in which the Welshman showed.

“The one thing I liked about him, when he got the ball on the right side and knocked it past Charlie Taylor like he was just standing there,” said Merson.

“I thought ‘wow, that was Gareth Bale’. He was lightning quick, not just a good player but he had that turn of pace.

“When he did it to Taylor, I thought ‘this lad could be back’. But, how is he going to be when it’s a big game, and the full-back he’s playing against is going the other way and he’s got to come back with him?”

Tottenham fans will be hoping that Bale is timing his form and fitness to perfection because there are a number of big games coming up.

From Europa League knockout matches to that North London derby against Arsenal, Bale can play a huge part in Spurs coming out of these games on the front foot.

If Spurs come out of the wrong side then Jose Mourinho may find himself heading for the exit door.
