Jermaine Jenas has suggested to BT Sport that Erik Lamela looked angry at Steven Bergwijn for failing to pass during Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League game against Wolfsberger AC last night.
Bergwijn is yet to score for Spurs this season, but his determination to break his duck was clear last night.
The Dutchman operated with a shoot on sight policy, which didn’t always go down well with his teammates.
Indeed, in the very opening stages, Bergwijn chopped inside before dragging a shot well wide of the post from outside of the area.
Lamela had made an overlapping run at the time, but was ignored – and his frustrations were evident.
The Argentine turned round and glared at his teammate, but Jenas felt that Bergwijn did the right thing, as he wants the winger to show greater attacking intent from now on.
“I don’t mind that. He was getting the eyes from Lamela, who has made a run into a good position, but I’m thinking from Bergwijn – do this more often, take responsibility, drive at your defender and get some shots on target,” he said.
Bergwijn has played an important role for Spurs this term, despite his lack of goals.
However, as a forward player he is going to have to start hitting the back of the net more often if he is to earn game time, especially with Dele Alli and Gareth Bale now seemingly hitting form.
