Michael Owen was critical of Harry Kane’s equalising goal during Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-3 win against Leeds United by claiming that Clement Lenglet ‘bundled into’ Illan Meslier prior to his teammate putting the ball into the back of the net.

Leeds had opened the scoring through their man-of-the-moment Crysencio Summerville, before Kane levelled 15 minutes later.

But Owen thought that the Leeds keeper was fouled by Lenglet when the corner came in and Kane’s goal shouldn’t have stood, with the Leeds players protesting the call.

It proved to be a crucial moment because, whilst Rodrigo had put Leeds back ahead just before the break, the home team were still within touching distance of Jesse Marsch’s side heading into the second half.

And as Spurs have done all season long, they just continued to charge at Leeds’ defence, including Rodrigo Bentancur proving to be the match-winner with a brace.

Nonetheless, Owen slammed the call to allow Kane’s goal to stand given Lenglet’s actions towards Meslier, as he told Premier League Productions (12/11/22 at 5:05 pm)

“I thought that was a foul on the goalkeeper,” said Owen. “Not given. He was bundled into. But Harry Kane with a great touch and finish to get them back into it. It was just topsy-turvy from then on.”

He also added on Tyler Adams’ red card: “Just to top of the frustration in the last few minutes, thinking they were going to get something out of the game, then just a bit of frustration (from Adams).

“If you weren’t on a yellow card already, then it would have been a decent foul because you are just stopping play a little bit. But being on a yellow card, you have to be a little bit smarter.”

WORLD CUP BREAK

For some, the break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has perhaps come at the wrong time given their momentum and the run they are on.

Premier League table-toppers Arsenal and Champions League-chasing Newcastle United are two of those teams.

But there will be some that will be glad that this break has come along, so they can reset and go again post-Christmas and Spurs and Leeds are probably just some of those sides.
