Tony Adams has claimed that Jose Mourinho was doing ‘fantastic’ for Tottenham prior to the club sacking him, as he told Sky Sports.
The Highbury legend admitted that he didn’t see Mourinho as a Tottenham-like coach because he wasn’t ‘open enough’ in his style of play.
Mourinho was given his marching orders by Daniel Levy towards the back end of last season, despite being days away from a League Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley.
It was clear that Mourinho’s style wasn’t what Tottenham wanted and the club didn’t hesitate in allowing the trophy-laden coach to leave.
Questions will then be asked as to why Nuno Espirito Santo was brought into the club because he is more defensive-minded than his fellow countryman.
But this is what Adams had to say about Mourinho and the job he was doing in North London.
“Both clubs are in transition for me,” said Adams. “I thought Mourinho was actually doing a fantastic job for Spurs.
“George Graham went there. I never thought of him as a Tottenham manager. He’s not open enough, for them.”
It started well for Mourinho at Spurs, but as the games ticked by, so did the club’s form and mood.
Getting into the Champions League places was Mourinho’s task and winning a trophy.
Earning that top-four spot was probably out of the picture by the time Mourinho left, but they were on the cusp of bringing some silverware home.
Now, they have just been demolished in the North London derby, so perhaps Mourinho wasn’t the problem, after all.
And a certain Daniel Levy now needs to take accountability for his actions, not just in recent times, but when Mauricio Pochettino was also here.
