Phil Foden has praised Liverpool full-back James Milner after yesterday’s game at Anfield, in comments made to the BBC

Milner drafted in

Milner had a difficult afternoon up against the young England international, who played a starring role for City.

Milner first was close to giving away a penalty, and then the Liverpool full-back was relatively fortunate not to get sent off, after bringing down Bernardo Silva on the halfway line.

Milner was promptly taken off after that incident, which may have been of some relief to the experienced Liverpool man.

Foden had clearly targeted him throughout the contest, where he claimed a goal and an assist.

But the City youngster was still full of praise for Liverpool’s most experienced player after the game.

“I respect [James Milner] as a player, I used to watch him in the academy when he was at City. He was a great opponent to play against today, very physical and experienced,” Foden said.

Back to the bench?

Milner’s performance is unlikely to have done much to keep him in the team after the international break.

Liverpool are expected to have Trent Alexander-Arnold back in their squad in two weeks’ time, when the right-back should be fully fit again.

Alexander-Arnold is widely expected to step straight back into Liverpool’s line-up once again when he is back fit, which could see Milner dropped back down and given a bench role.
