Ian Wright has claimed that Leicester City midfielder James Maddison wanted to join Newcastle United in the summer.

Newcastle splashed the cash during the summer transfer window, spending over £100 million, including breaking their club-record transfer.

That was spent on the highly-rated striker, Alexander Isak, who joined from Spanish side Real Sociedad – he scored on his debut against Liverpool.

But whilst the Toon Army faithful enjoy the upward curve their club has been on since the Saudi-led takeover, including Eddie Howe’s appointment, it’s a different story at the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes only brought in one senior player this summer, as well as losing key figures such as, Kasper Schmeichel to Nice and Wesley Fofana to Chelsea.

Wright spoke about Maddison wanting to leave and Leicester’s current situation under Brendan Rodgers, as he told Premier League Productions (05/09/22 at 2:40 pm).

“Maddison he wanted to leave, like Newcastle,” said Wright. “When you look at the side, it’s about recruitment.

“Yes, James Justin is fantastic and the left-back Luke Thomas. Yes, they have players that are coming through. But they aren’t signing the players that come in and make such a massive impact. And Fofana has gone.”

WILL NEWCASTLE PUSH FOR MADDISON AGAIN?

In terms of finances, Newcastle have every penny in the locker to put whatever they wish on the table for Maddison, it’s just a case of how far are they willing to push.

Dubbed a ‘super talent’ by Danny Murphy on talkSPORT, he thinks Maddison is a Champions League-worthy player, so it will be interesting if other teams knock for the England hopeful when the window re-opens.

Well, £60 million was mentioned in the summer for the goalscoring midfielder, so how far will Newcastle push again?

That’s if they want to go for him again because, by January, the Magpies might just be streets ahead of the Foxes.
