Michael Owen has shared that Liverpool midfielder James Milner told him that he can still play for ‘another two seasons’, as he told Premier League Productions (25/02/23 at 10:05 pm).
The 37-year-old started Liverpool’s goalless draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday, days after Jurgen Klopp’s side were walloped by Real Madrid in the Champions League.
It has raised further questions on the future of certain players, with Milner an obvious target.
Whilst the former Aston Villa and Newcastle United man has ambitions of playing until he’s 39, at the least, he might not get there in Liverpool colours.
Milner is out-of-contract at Anfield in June, and with the Reds in the middle of a crisis, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he heads for the exit door in the summer.
But whilst Liverpool have one plan for the veteran midfielder, it seems as though he has plans of his own, as Owen shared an insight.
“I was with James Milner a few days ago,” said Owen. “I had an hour’s chat with him. He still thinks he can play for another year or two seasons.
“He is fit as anybody at that club. He wins all the fitness tests and things like that. He will be still around to lead.”
LIVERPOOL CLEAR OUT
Whilst Milner’s contract has been extended before by one year, it’s probably not going to happen now.
It’s obvious that mass changes will need to be made in the summer. From Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Milner. The midfield is the main target of refreshment.
But it will still be interesting to see if Milner does land another Premier League gig because a possible return to Leeds United would perhaps be fitting.
That’s regardless of if the Yorkshire club are in the Premier League or the Championship next season.
