‘He stays, 100%’: Director says he would be ‘crazy’ to sell reported Everton target

Reported Everton target Salvatore Sirigu is ‘100 per cent’ staying at Torino this summer, with the club’s sporting director telling CronacaQui that he would be ‘crazy’ to sell the Italy international.

While Jordan Pickford looks set to remain the number one for both Everton and England despite a disastrous 2019/20 season full of high-profile blunders, Carlo Ancelotti can only dream of boasting the sort of strength in depth that Gareth Southgate enjoys.

The Three Lions boss can choose from Dean Henderson and Nick Pope at present, and that is without mentioning Aaron Ramsdale and Tom Heaton.

His Everton counterpart, meanwhile, has only Jonas Lossl and the unproven Joao Virginia in reserve. Both spent time out on loan last season.

According to Calciomercato in July, Ancelotti has enquired about the possibility of bringing Sirigu to Goodison Park in order to provide some much-needed competition for a goalkeeper who is in desperate need of a wake-up call.

But, after Sirigu almost single-handedly saved Torino from relegation, Davide Vagnati is understandably desperate to ensure his 33-year-old talisman stays put.

“He is the goalkeeper of the (Italian) national team. I would be crazy to say that he is up for sale. I say that he stays – 100 per cent!” the sporting director says.

“I do not see other situations to this.”

Sirigu, a former Sevilla and PSG goalkeeper who has played 24 times for Italy, is one of a number of experienced shot-stoppers who have been linked with a summer move to Goodison Park, alongside Athletic Bilbao’s Iago Herrerin and Manchester United bench-warmer Sergio Romero.
