Xavi Hernandez has warned Newcastle United target Ousmane Dembélé that ‘the situation can’t be better for him’ regarding his contract situation at the club.

The Barcelona boss stated that he has told Dembélé that he is ‘waiting for him to make an effort’, as he told Marca.

Dembele’s contract at the Nou Camp expires in the summer, and so far, there has been no movement on the 24-year-old signing on the dotted line.

With Newcastle United’s pockets now filled with money, it isn’t a surprise that they are one of the clubs keen on signing the ball-carrying expert.

The signs do suggest that Barcelona want to keep the player on board, it’s just a case of waiting for something to be agreed.

That was touched upon by Xavi, who warned the player that he should ‘think about himself and his future’.

“I have already said it to him, I am waiting for him to make an effort,” said Xavi. “The situation cannot be better for him. Let’s see what he decides.

“I’m hoping that he puts in the effort before deciding. I am calm and waiting on an update.

“It does not depend on me. It depends on the club and him. He should think about himself and his future.”

Newcastle’s new era will seemingly kick off with the Magpies signing a player from Spain in Kieran Trippier, as reported by Sky Sports.

That signing is a signal of intent itself because the Atletico Madrid man was England’s number one right back in the summer at Euro 2020.

Plus, Trippier is swapping the La Liga champions, who are competing in the Champions League, for a team in the relegation zone in England’s top-flight.

Possibly bringing Dembele to the club would elevate Newcastle’s status even further and send a message to their relegation rivals that they intend to do everything in their power to get out of their current mess.
