Journalist Darren Lewis has said on The Kelly & Wrighty Show that Antonio Conte told him that he wanted to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane when he was in charge of Chelsea.

The Mirror reporter has claimed that in 2017, Conte told a group of journalists that he wanted to sign Kane, not Alvaro Morata.

Back in the summer of 2017, Chelsea signed Spanish striker Morata from Real Madrid for £70 million.

Lewis said: “I was on the Asia tour [2017] after they won the title. They bought Morata. He said to a little group of us, he would rather have had Kane.

“He left Chelsea because they bought players he did not want. Give him what he wants, and he will be a success – just look at Inter Milan.”

Encouraging for Harry Kane

While Morata struggled to make an impact at Chelsea, Kane has gone from strength to strength at Spurs.

In our view, Kane would have been a better signing for the Blues than Morata was.

However, it was always unlikely that Tottenham would sell the striker to Chelsea.

After all, Spurs and Chelsea are bitter London rivals.

Conte’s desire to sign Kane back when he was the manager of Chelsea is actually encouraging for the 28-year-old striker.

It shows how highly Conte rates the England international.

We know that Kane is struggling at the moment, but under Conte, he could get back to his best.
