Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas has been speaking to L’Equipe about transfers, where he made a claim about Newcastle and Bruno Guimaraes.
What’s the story?
Well, Aulas accused the 24-year-old of betraying him and going back on his word because sealing a £40m move to Newcastle in January.
As quoted by L’Equipe, the 72-year-old said: “We won’t extend Maxence Caqueret at any price, but we absolutely want him to stay. He said he didn’t know if he was going to stay, but you shouldn’t rely on players’ statements. Bruno Guimaraes said he absolutely wanted to stay, and he left, and not only because of us.”
The Frenchman certainly doesn’t sound too happy with the Brazilian.
However, things can change pretty quickly in football.
It’s quite likely that Guimaraes was being genuine when telling Aulas he planned to stay, but perhaps the situation then changed.
Whatever the reason, we feel it’s poor from Aulas to mention this to L’Equipe, as it portrays the Newcastle maestro as something of a liar.
Bruno Guimaraes should ignore Aulas and focus on Newcastle

Aulas has developed a reputation for being quite an outspoken character, who often fails to hold back on his words.
Therefore, Guimaraes shouldn’t take his comments to heart – it would be best to ignore the Lyon President and move on.
The South American has an exciting project at Newcastle to get his teeth stuck into, where he is now the headline name for Eddie Howe to build the side around.

It speaks volumes about how attractive Newcastle are nowadays, that a player like Guimaraes was prepared to abandon a place in the Europa League Round of 16 to join the Magpies in a relegation battle.
Should Newcastle survive this season and go on to emulate Manchester City, the Toon Army will never forget the fact Guimaraes was among the first big names to take the plunge and join them.
