Ramon Vega has backed Son Heung-min to be a ‘superb’ leader for Tottenham Hotspur after Ange Postecoglou decided to hand him the captain’s armband.

The former Tottenham player added on Twitter that Son Heung-min ‘never wanted to leave’ the club, after previously suggesting that Harry Kane made a ‘lucky escape’ by joining Bayern Munich.

With Saudi Arabia trying to make a name for itself on the football stage, the Middle Eastern giants have been making some statement signings this summer.

They even knocked on Son’s door, but pretty much straight away, he made it public that he isn’t going anywhere.

Given that Kane has now gone, the last thing Spurs needed was for the South Korean star to also head for the exit door because, whilst he declined last season, the £192k-a-week star (Spotrac) is still very much important to the team.

That’s why Ange Postecoglou has decided to name Son as his next captain, with Vega responding to that news and how he committed his future to the team.

“He will be superb as a leader and Captain,” said Vega.

“I’m very excited about Ange’s new way of approaching and playing. Ange will give that calmness, freedom and guidance to these existing players and the new ones arrive or coming hopefully to the Club now that some cash is in the Club’s kitty, give Ange some support on that.

“No, he never wanted to leave in fact he prolonged the contract and wants to stay at Spurs without a fuss. So he deserves the captaincy.”

Can Son find his form again?

Two seasons ago, the 31-year-old was winning the Premier League’s Golden Boot for the first time in his career.

He was on a high and hitting the best form of his career at the right time, but everything fell off last season, as he struggled for form, consistency and most importantly goals.

With Kane now out of the door, his goals need replacing and fans will be looking towards their new captain to deliver the goods.
