‘He never stops’: Manager who reportedly wants Celtic job once raved about 28-year-old Bhoy

Celtic-linked Walter Mazzarri is a big fan of Diego Laxalt, according to previous comments from the former Inter Milan head coach.

The Sunday Post reported at the weekend that former Inter and Napoli head coach Mazzarri wants to become the new manager of Celtic.

The defending Scottish champions are without a permanent manager at the moment following the departure of Neil Lennon last week, with John Kennedy placed in temporary charge of the first team.

Mazzarri, who was very successful at Napoli but struggled at Inter and also had a stint at Watford in England, is without a managerial role at the moment following his departure from Torino in February 2020.

The Italian brought Laxalt to Inter and also worked with him at Torino, and he has spoken highly of the 28-year-old previously.

The Uruguay international, who can operate as a left-back or as a left-winger, joined Celtic on loan from AC Milan in the summer of 2020.

The Scottish Sun quotes Mazzarri as saying about Laxalt in October 2020: “I signed Diego when he was just a kid and I used him as a central midfielder at first. Since then he’s been a left winger and a left back and he’s excelled in every position he’s been asked to play.

“What you get with Diego is lots and lots of running and hard work. He never stops and always keeps going. He’s in peak physical condition. You could even use him as an attacking midfielder too because he has the ability to spot gaps and make forward runs at the right time.

“He’s just one of those players that are so useful because he could adapt to playing in any position really.”

Some Celtic fans do not want the club to appoint Mazzarri, as shown below, and it remains to be seen if the Bhoys make an approach for him.

Meanwhile, Stephen Welsh has said that he hopes that Scott Brown stays at Celtic beyond the summer of 2021.

The Scottish midfielder is out of contract at Celtic at the end of the season, and 21-year-old defender Welsh hopes that he extends his stay at Celtic Park.

Welsh told The Scottish Sun: “Broony is massive for us. Massive. He’s our leader and we’d miss him a lot if he wasn’t here next season. We need to take every day as it comes. I really don’t know what he’s going to do. Personally I would love him to be here as long as possible because he helps me so much.”
