Alan Shearer told Amazon Prime Sport that Jordan Henderson ‘never stopped getting around the pitch’ during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The former striker shared that Liverpool found life tough during the second period, but it was Henderson’s never-say-die attitude that got them over the line.
It seemed as though the game was heading for a draw before the technician Firmino took a leaf out of Shearer’s old manual and scored a 90th-minute header with precision and power.
After the game, Shearer shared how Henderson stood up in the difficult moments for his table-topping side.
“I think he typifies everything that Liverpool are,” said Shearer. “They have got a great attitude and it starts from him.
“They played some fantastic football in that first half. Their one and two touch football, which he was starting and the way he fizzes the ball into the forwards. Into Salah and into Mane.
“In the second half, it wasn’t quite working for Liverpool. But what never stopped was he never stopped getting around that pitch. He never stopped encouraging. The engine room in the middle of the park. His attitude I thought dragged Liverpool in the second half.”
It has been some journey for Liverpool’s £20 million man [BBC Sport], who will go down as one of the club’s greatest ever players.
In truth, during the early years, not many would have expected the combative Englishmen to be in this position, but his relentless mindset has got him to this level.
Liverpool have been known for this ‘monster mentality’, which stems from their manager on the touchline and their captain in the middle of the park.
