Calls for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to consider retirement have grown louder following his loss to Jake Paul, with a Hall of Famer weighing in this time.

Paul eased to a decision win over Chavez Jr. in front of a lively crowd on home soil at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

The American cruised to his first 12-round victory, with all three judges agreeing he won at least nine of the rounds.

Paul is now expected to take on Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez in his next fight. Meanwhile, Chavez Jr. needs to decide if it is worth continuing his career.

Shane Mosley doesn’t think he should, and explained why after a strange showing at the weekend.

Having previously worked as Paul’s trainer back in 2020, Mosley has closely followed his development over the years.

However, he was impressed by how Chavez Jr. responded to the opportunity at the weekend.

After the fight, the Hall of Famer told Fight Hub TV that the former WBC middleweight champion needs to walk away from the sport for good.

“He didn’t throw any punches until the third or fourth round or something, he was just kind of walking forward,” Mosley said.

“I don’t know what he was doing, it was weird. It was weird to see that type of fighting.

“Chavez Jr needs to retire. If you can’t throw any punches in two, three, four rounds, what are we doing?

“You’re just living off your father’s name because you didn’t even fight until the last two rounds, and you had success when you threw some punches. It’s the weirdest thing ever.”

Father reveals where his son went wrong

Speaking to Fight Hype, Julio Cesar Chavez — Chavez Jr’s father — said his son failed to be more aggressive in the early rounds.

However, he described himself as proud of Chavez Jr — who hadn’t fought in two years — and expressed relief that his son did not suffer any health problems in the fight.

“He’s very happy about his son, he had a little bit of ring-rust, because he was out of the ring for over two years, but he’s very happy that his son is healthy”, said the interpreter who translated Chavez’s words.

“He gave a good fight, he just didn’t throw enough punches in the first round. He said he’s very happy with the outcome. He said his son should’ve done more in the beginning to win, but he’s very happy Julio came out healthy.”
