Ally McCoist says midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum ‘misses’ Liverpool and he has ‘struggled’ since his Anfield exit in 2021, as he told talkSPORT Breakfast (15/03/23).

The 32-year-old left Liverpool during the summer of 2021 when his contract expired and he proceeded to join PSG on a free transfer – he is now on loan at Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

A player of high intelligence, reliability and box-to-box qualities, Wijnaldum is someone that Jurgen Klopp could do with today given the club’s struggles, especially in midfield.

Sometimes a player’s value and need within a team grows once he is out of the door and that could be said of Wijnaldum right now.

But whilst the Reds could do with him today amid their struggles, it’s not been easy for the player himself, especially having to deal with a long-term injury once he left Merseyside.

This was touched upon by talkSPORT duo Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

“Mentioned Wijnaldum there, I saw him playing up front for Roma the other day,” said Brazil. “Tammy Abraham was on the bench.”

McCoist responded: “He has actually struggled since he left. It was an amazing one. They have definitely (missed him). When he left Liverpool, I thought they missed him, but I think he misses them. It didn’t work.”

LIVERPOOL’S MIDFIELD REFRESH

It might be a few years too late, but Liverpool are going to refresh their midfield this summer.

Some would argue, just before Wijnaldum left or during the summer he headed for the exit door, that’s when a few new faces should have been brought in.

But, for one reason or another, it didn’t happen and now Liverpool are having to pay the price for it. The club will be hoping that matters don’t become worse and they don’t end up finishing out of the top four, which would cost them when trying to sign new players.
