Rio Ferdinand thinks David Moyes’ West Ham United will have trouble paying Harry Maguire’s wages amid his possible exit from Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.
The Premier League legend made it clear that if he was in Harry Maguire’s shoes, then he would be ‘gone’, as he told JOE.
For well over 18 months now, but especially last season, the 30-year-old has faced troubling times at Manchester United, including Erik ten Hag stripping him of the captain’s armband this summer.
It has now been suggested that West Ham United, who still haven’t spent the Declan Rice money, want to take him on board.
A recent report from Sky Sports suggested that both clubs have agreed on a ‘£30 million’ fee for the England international.
But Ferdinand highlighted that Maguire is on ‘£200k-a-week’ and that might prove to be a stumbling block.
“I would be gone,” said Ferdinand. “I would be out of Manchester United now.
“I watched a game the other day, a friendly, and he is getting like you can hear shouts in the stadiums and you feel the bad energy in the stadium when he gets on the ball sometimes.
“Do you want to wake up and play football like that? Just start afresh, I think. I don’t think it’s all in his hands, that’s the difference. Not all in Harry Maguire’e hands.
“He can just get up and say ‘I am going to get up and go to a club’ because there is big money involved. He has to find a club that’s willing to pay, at least, half of what he is getting paid now or the full £200k-a-week, or whatever it is, and then the fee.
On West Ham not being able to pay Maguire’s wages: “That’s what I am saying, it’s out of his hands. He might have to stay at Manchester United now.”
Maguire needs to force a move
The signs are pretty clear, he isn’t wanted by his current club and the fans are getting on his back at every moment.
He isn’t helping himself by making mistakes in pre-season, but whatever you think of him, he is an easy target.
If Maguire opts to stay put, then it will only end in one way and that’s the player declining even further.
