Jose Mourinho told talkSPORT that Didier Deschamps made a ‘mistake’ involving Tottenham’s Moussa Sissoko at Euro 2020 on Monday.
France crashed out of the European Championships when they were beaten on penalties by Switzerland after trading various blows over 120 minutes that resulted in scores being level at 3-3.
But with the French winning 3-1 after 88 minutes, Tottenham’s Sissoko came into the fray for Antoine Griezmann.
Minutes later, the World Champions were preparing for extra time after conceding two goals in next to no time.
Mourinho shared why this was a ‘mistake’ from Deschamps part as his nation ended up crashing out in specular fashion.
“When you make a change on minute 89,” said Mourinho “And take one of your best players, Griezmann, that was playing amazingly well and make that change – Griezmann for Sissoko – if it is a points game without extra-time, that is okay.
“When there is the prospect of extra-time, that’s a big gamble. When you make that change and they equalise on minute 91 or 92, you go to extra-time, you want to shoot yourself because you left Griezmann out of that extra time.
“Then in extra-time, you have the unlucky situation you can’t control of Benzema getting injured or feeling something and you lose your two top attacking players.
“At this moment, Deschamps knows he made that mistake which is something that can happen to everyone one of us. When you have the possibility of extra time open, you don’t take off one of your best players.”

Sissoko actually didn’t do too badly when he came onto the pitch, but he did have a trademark shot that ballooned over the bar.
The problem for the Spurs man is that as soon as he entered the pitch, it all went wrong for his country, even though it was none of his fault.
But Sissoko should be used to licking his wounds given what he has had to experience at Spurs over the years.
Now it’s a case of returning to club action next month and the prospect that he won’t have a manager in charge because Daniel Levy is yet to find a replacement for Mourinho.
