Tottenham Hotspur assistant head coach Cristian Stellini has told Football.London that getting dismissed against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the North London derby affected Emerson Royal.

Stellini made the comments about Emerson while analysing the Tottenham right wing-back’s performances in recent games.

The 24-year-old Brazil International is playing well for Spurs at the moment.

It seems that the signing of Pedro Porro in the January transfer window has pushed the 24-year-old to step up his game.

Stellini has suggested that Emerson is a player who needs love and confidence to play his best.

The Tottenham assistant head coach has added that getting sent-off against Arsenal in the North London derby earlier in the season did affect Emerson’s momentum.

Back in October 2022, Arsenal beat Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League.

Emerson was dismissed in the 62nd minute for a foul on Gabriel Martinelli.

The Tottenham no. 12 has scored two goals and given one assist in 15 starts and four substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this season.

The former Barcelona player has also made five starts and two substitute appearances in the UEFA Champions League, and has made one start and one substitute appearance in the FA Cup for Spurs so far this campaign.

Cristian Stellini on Arsenal match affecting Tottenham Hotspur’s Emerson Royal

Stellini said about Emerson: “Emerson is a Brazilian player. We have different cultures from Europe and South America.

“Emerson needed time to understand the difference in the culture of football, but at the same time, he has to be himself. He has to show who he is. Sometimes this type of player loses confidence if he doesn’t feel love around him.

“We don’t have to stop to give him this, but let him understand the difference in the type of football. When his pace and his intensity is really high, he can enjoy.

“When he thinks too much, he’s not the same player. So we have to follow this aspect, to feel Emerson every time being involved in the game.”

The Tottenham assistant head coach added: “If he continues to play like this, I think it’s compulsory for Brazil to call him.

“I hope for him that that can happen. Also, not to give him an excuse, he lost the pace after the three-match ban (against Arsenal) and the World Cup.

“This season is completely different if you compare with the other seasons. The World Cup changed the pace for many players and many teams.”
