Paul Merson has claimed that it’s a ‘big ask’ for Harvey Elliott to play on a regular basis for Liverpool, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (11/09/21 at 1:10 pm).
The Liverpool teenager has started or featured in every Premier League game for his boyhood club this season, despite more senior faces sitting on the bench or being beside him.
Given the fact that Jurgen Klopp threw Elliott into the deep end against Chelsea before the international break, it says a lot as to how much his manager trusts the quick-thinking midfielder.
Despite Merson claiming that Elliott ‘looks a player’, he doesn’t think he will be playing ‘every game’.
“Harvey Elliott isn’t going to be able to play every game,” said Merson. “It’s going to be a big ask of the kid.
“But he looks a player. If you go buy a player for £50 million in his position then you are holding him back. When he can do a job.
“What’s he going to do different that a £50 million player can’t do? It won’t be much, from what I have seen in the last few games.”
Whilst those around Liverpool, mainly their Premier League rivals, went crazy during the summer transfer window.
The Reds only brought in one senior signing in Ibrahima Konate, as they opted against adding more depth to their final third.
For some, that’s a risk because Liverpool’s forward line is one injury away from being in potential trouble.
But perhaps, it shows how well Klopp is doing that he is bringing through a teenager in Elliott, whilst his Premier League title rival smashed the British transfer record for a £100 million player.
