Ben Godfrey has stated that his Everton teammate Mason Holgate ‘likes a tackle’ after his red card challenge against Tottenham on Sunday, as posted on his club’s channel.

The Everton defender was shown a straight red, after consultation with VAR, following his high boot and follow through on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Both Everton and Tottenham recorded a goalless draw over the weekend, with VAR being used on a number of occasions during the hotly-contested encounter.

Even though the home fans would have been annoyed with the overturned penalty, there’s no doubting that Holgate deserved a red for his actions.

But Godfrey defended his teammates and suggested that it was just an unfortunate moment for the player.

“Mason’s not the type of guy to go out and hurt anyone,” said Godfrey.

“He likes a tackle and has just gone in to try and put a firm challenge in and win the ball.

“Unfortunately in football, sometimes you can catch a man and the referee thought it was a red card.

“I feel for Mason because he works hard every single day and he will be devastated. He will get over it and he will be back, I am sure of it.”

The last international break of 2021 will hit everyone’s screens during these next two weeks, which will be a relief to all supporters.

Everton will be hoping star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin can return back to action because he has been hugely missed up top.

He would normally be linking up with Harry Kane at St George’s Park, and in truth, given the Tottenham man’s form, some would have probably been backing him to start if he was fit.

But the Spurs faithful will be hoping Kane can find some form for England because the signs suggest that he won’t be turning around this horror run he is currently on.
