Liverpool may be enduring a difficult period but they still have two of the most respected full-backs in the game

Defeat against Manchester City represented another low point in a frustrating spell for Liverpool, but in Trent Alexander-Arnold they still have one of world football’s most talented full-backs.

The 22-year-old has already won a Champions League and Premier League in his short career, and believes the assists and goals he provides are indicative of a modern trend for more attack-minded players in his position.

Alexander-Arnold, who has made 26 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s team during the current campaign, says Andy Robertson has been a key factor in his progress.

26-year-old Robertson, who reportedly earns £100,000 per week at Anfield, has become a popular figure since arriving from Hull in July 2017.

The left-back has formed a successful partnership with Alexander-Arnold in recent campaigns, and has been singled out by the Englishman in an interview with ESPN.

Alexander-Arnold said: “I impacted how the numbers, probably, integrate even more with the work of the side, now, with goals and assists. I can’t take all the credit, I have to share it with Robertson, too.

“He leverages me and I leverage him to break those records. It’s not about changing the side’s role, but it’s how we can be good for the team and help win games.

“If that means having more assists and goals, then that is what it means.”

On Liverpool’s faltering title bid, he said: “For me, the only thing that really matters in football is the results. We can have a good season, but if we don’t finish at the top, we won’t have a good season, really, in my opinion.

“In football, in some games, we play well, but we have not managed to turn good performances into victories. This, for me, does not make them good matches.

“Our job is to focus on winning games. We have to have good performances, but focus on winning.”
