Shaun Maloney has told The Sunday Post that David Marshall would be a success at Celtic.

The former Scotland international played with Marshall at Celtic, and the 37-year-old believes that the 35-year-old Scotland international goalkeeper would thrive if he returned to the Hoops.

According to a report in Herald Scotland earlier this month, Celtic are interested in signing Marshall in the summer transfer window.

The report has added that due to Wigan Athletic going into administration, the Championship club in England may let the former Cardiff City man leave for free.

Maloney told The Sunday Post about Marshall: “Whoever buys him is going to get a player with loads of experience of playing at a high level.

“He has played in Europe plenty of times for Celtic, including, of course, the famous shut-out against Barcelona in the Nou Camp in 2004, and come through some high-pressure situations with Scotland.

“Do I think he could go back and be a big player for Celtic? Of course. I think he will do well wherever he goes.

“He knows the club, he knows the manager and he knows the support. So he would be going into an environment that was familiar to him, which can help.”

Need for a goalkeeper

With Craig Gordon having left this summer and Fraser Forster going back to his parent club Southampton in the Premier League after a successful loan spell at Celtic Park in 2019-20, Celtic do desperately need to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

The 2020-21 Scottish Premiership campaign will start next month, and Scott Bain is the only senior goalkeeper in Neil Lennon’s first-team squad.

Meanwhile, former Celtic defender John Hughes has given his take on the current situation of striker Leigh Griffiths.

According to The Scottish Sun, the Scotland international has been left out of the Hoops’ trip to France due to him not being fit enough.

The Scottish Sun quotes Hughes as saying: “I love Leigh. He is a real loveable rogue and I signed him as a 15-year-old when he was playing for Leith Athletic.

“I just hope he can get his head down, get himself fit and back in that Celtic team and play a big part in the challenge to get ten in a row.”
