Speaking on Off The Ball, The Athletic’s Matt Slater has been discussing the recent news that Liverpool are up for sale and some of the potential buyers.

Slater says that some of the people we should be looking at as potential owners are the losers from this summer’s race to buy Chelsea, and he’s made an interesting claim about Steve Pagliuca.

Slater ran through a whole host of prospective buyers, but his comments about Pagliuca were undoubtedly the most interesting.

Indeed, Slater noted that Pagliuca already owns the Boston Celtics – a sports franchise with similar roots and history to Liverpool, while he also says that the 67-year-old already has some contacts within the FSG group, which isn’t all that surprising when you consider they own another Boston-based sports team – the Red Sox.

Pagliuca a contender

Slater spoke about who could buy Liverpool.

“My hunch would be to look at the losers from the Chelsea race and anyone else that was mentioned in that. Those are your rich American groups who would quite like an EPL team. Harris Blitzer, Steve Pagliuca who owns the Boston Celtics. There are a lot of parallels there in terms of the Celtics and Liverpool, and he knows some guys in FSG’s group. The Ricketts’ who own the Cubs, Woody Johnson who owns the Jets. These names always come up, these are the guys you want to be phoning,” Slater said.

Would make sense

The more you think about it, the more Pagliuca going for Liverpool would make sense.

He knows FSG, he clearly wants a Premier League club after his Chelsea pursuit, and his sporting interests seem to align with Liverpool – after all, the Celtics are similarly working-class and for the people in the same way Liverpool always have been.

Interestingly, Pagliuca also is a shareholder in the Serie A side Atalanta, so perhaps there’s a partnership to be formed there which could be fruitful for both clubs.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on going forwards.
