Speaking on the BBC’s coverage of England vs Germany (29/6/21 5PM), Jack Grealish has shared what Gareth Southgate told him before he was subbed on.

The Aston Villa talisman changed the game when he came on, playing a part in both of England’s goals and proving once and for all that he should be a key member of this squad.

Grealish came on in such a high-pressure moment, and as you can imagine, Southgate had something to say to him before he came on.

What’s been said?

Grealish shared what Southgate told him before he was brought on against Germany.

“The manager, he just told me to go on and express myself, and play the way I usually do, with a smile on my face,” Grealish said.

“I went on and did that, and luckily for me I created one of the goals.”

All you need

Southgate got his advice to Grealish absolutely right.

When you have a player like this, you don’t need to overcomplicate things, just let them get on the ball and do their thing.

Grealish made sure to express himself when he came on and it’s fair to say this substitution paid off with the Villa man playing a starring role after his introduction.

It’s a drum that’s been banged so many times over the past fortnight, but once again we have to reiterate that Grealish simply has to start in England’s remaining games at this tournament.

Fingers crossed there’s more magic to come from the Villa captain at Euro 2020.
