Speaking to JOE, Danny Rose has been discussing numerous elements of his career, and he’s touched on Tottenham’s Champions League run during the 2018/19 season.

As we all know, Spurs reached the final that year, losing to Liverpool in Madrid, but they had to go through one hell of a journey to get there.

They scored an upset victory against Man City in the quarter-finals, while they came from 3-0 down to beat Ajax on away goals in the semi-finals.

Rose has now shared what Mauricio Pochettino said to the squad at 3-0 down in that game.

What Pochettino said

Rose shared details of that team talk.

“It is definitely a top three moment. That one and the round before against City where we were 1-0 up going into the away game too,” Rose said.

“We had a great half-time team talk from the manager. He was going in 3-0 down and you expect the manager to throw the kitchen sink at you, but he was super calm, he gave great advice and he was so relaxed. He just said ‘look, whoever scores the next goal, the tie is wide open.’ When your manager is delivering messages like that, we had all of the motivation we needed and it was brilliant.”

It worked

It sounds like Pochettino kept it very brief and simple with his message in Amsterdam, but it seemed to work a treat.

Indeed, Spurs came out from that team-talk and put in one of the all-time great Champions League performances, scoring three goals in 45 minutes to get to the final.

Lucas Moura’s hat-trick will go down in history, and it seems as though Pochettino’s message must’ve really resonated with the Brazilian. Four years on, that game is still remembered as one of the best in recent history.
