Tim Sherwood has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo bullied Tottenham defender Cristian Romero during his side’s 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford over the weekend, as he told Premier League Productions.
The former Spurs boss was making reference to Romero allowing Ronaldo to head in the winning goal and how the Man United forward just didn’t allow his opponent to get hold of him when battling him during a corner.
Looking back at that moment, Romero would have had his head in his hands because of what he did moments before.
When Spurs equalised, Romero screamed in Harry Maguire’s face when he put the ball into his own net, but it was the English defender having the last laugh.
Nonetheless, this is what Sherwood made of Romero’s defending over the weekend and how he should have done better.
“He just bullies Romero,” said Sherwood. “Then he gets a run on Doherty.
“But it’s the jostling before the goal, ‘get off’. Ronaldo just throws him out of the way. That’s the gym work. That’s the ice baths. That’s the preparations. Then, you get your rewards on the matchday.”
Overall, Spurs fans will be happy with what Romero has brought to the table ever since he was purchased by the club in the summer.
It was a stop-start beginning for the Argentina international because of injuries and his call to go on national duty with Giovani Lo Celso, Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez when his own club had banned him to do so, at the time, because of COVID.
Either way, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen departing north London in recent times, Spurs have needed someone to fill their boots.
Eric Dier is already doing a brilliant job and he might have found a partner in Romero, it’s now a case of others stepping up.
