Clinton Morrison praised Eddie Nketiah for making an ‘impact’ once more despite Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (09/11/22 at 10:05 pm).

This must feel odd for Arsenal fans because they haven’t been used to tasting defeat this season.

In the context of the whole season, what Mikel Arteta’s side were going to do in the EFL Cup was one of the least of their worries, but it’s still a disappointment at missing out on winning a trophy.

Things started well when Nketiah, who was starting his seventh game of the campaign, opened the scoring after 20 minutes, only to be pegged back by Danny Welbeck from the penalty spot.

Rather than Arsenal going on to stick their chest out and get something from the game, it was Brighton who scored two more goals in the second half to book their passage into the next round.

Despite that loss, former Crystal Palace striker Morrison praised Nketiah for his goal and for making the ball talk once again when handed a chance.

“Arsenal started the game brilliantly, it was a brilliant goal from Nketiah,” said Morrison. “It was a brilliant run from Nelson and Nketiah scored.

“It was a great finish. He isn’t getting much football. But when he is called upon from the bench in these cup competitions, then he does make an impact. It was a confident finish.”

A CHANCE TO END ON TOP

Arsenal are sitting top of the Premier League tree heading into the World Cup break and three points against Wolves on Saturday will ensure they remain top at Christmas.

Whilst it won’t add extra points to their name during the final weeks of the campaign, it does provide the team with that crumb of comfort heading into the second half of the season.
