What a rotten day for West Ham United.

Not only did Manchester United win 2-1 in East London courtesy of a late winner, but it was a late winner from Jesse Lingard, who spent the second half of last season on loan with the Hammers.

In addition to that, West Ham had a chance to equalise in the dying seconds but Mark Noble – substituted into the game just to take a penalty – missed from 12 yards as David de Gea saved.

It could and probably should’ve been at least a point for David Moyes’s side, but there were some positives nonetheless.

One of those came in the form of Declan Rice.

Once again, the West Ham midfielder was excellent in what was his first domestic game since scoring a brilliant solo goal in the Europa League on Thursday night.

And here’s what Karen Carney said about the 22-year-old, who earns £60,000 per week in East London.

She told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I watched Declan Rice at the Euros and he was just unbelievable. He has the ability to sniff out danger before it actually happens.

“That is why he is so good, he can clear up any mess or any situation before it happens for West Ham.”

The good news for the Irons is that they stood toe-to-toe with one of the Premier League’s best teams – a team with Cristiano Ronaldo, who equalised for the Red Devils – and should’ve taken a point.

When the dust settles, Moyes will probably take some solace in that, along with Rice’s display.
