Former Ukraine manager Myron Markevych is thrilled to see Dynamo Kiev star Vitaliy Mykolenko take on a new challenge at Premier League giants Everton, speaking to UA Tribuna.

It’s not every day a player makes the leap from Ukraine’s top flight to the most high-profile division in European football.

When confirming Mykolenko’s impending £18 million move to Everton on Thursday, Dynamo Kiev boss Mircea Lucescu pointed out that will be their club’s most high-profile sale since Andriy Yarmolenko left for Borussia Dortmund four years ago.

It’s certainly the most expensive.

Fabrizio Romano, writing in The Guardian, claims that Mykolenko will sign a five-year deal at Goodison Park.

“With his dedication and desire to improve, Mykolenko has earned this challenge,” says Markevych.

“This is a real challenge for a 22-year-old who has proven he is ready to test himself in the strongest league in world football.”

Some critics, including another former Ukraine manager, fear this is a case of ‘too much too soon’.

Markevych disagrees.

Will Mykolenko replace Lucas Digne at Everton?

“I have read the statements of some who say it is too early for Mykolenko to go to England. I don’t think so. On the contrary,” he adds.

“Vitaly urgently needs to say goodbye to UPL, where the competition is low. In the Premier League, he will have the chance not only to demonstrate his best qualities but also to eliminate his shortcomings.”

Back in 2007, Markevych coached a Metalist Kharkiv side who were knocked out of the UEFA Cup by David Moyes’ Everton.

“We had to play in the European Cup against Everton and had the opportunity to see how popular this club is in Liverpool, what discerning fans they have,” Markevych adds.

“I have no doubt that Mykolenko will gain credibility with local fans and make every effort to get Everton out of the relegation fight.

“In general, the transfer from Dynamo to Everton will serve to enhance the image of Ukrainian football.”

It remains to be seen what Mykolenko’s arrival means for Lucas Digne.

The France international has fallen out with Rafa Benitez and missed the last two Premier League outings.

According to 90Min, Digne wants to leave in January.
