Chris Sutton has admitted on BT Sport that he’s a massive fan of Celtic hitman Leigh Griffiths, but claimed that the player is clearly overweight.

Griffiths came off the bench to score Celtic’s only goal in last night’s dismal 4-1 defeat by Sparta Prague at Parkhead, which leaves the Hoops rock bottom of Group H in the Europa League with one point after three games.

The 30-year-old striker incurred the wrath of Neil Lennon by reporting for training at Lennoxtown out of shape during the summer and was subsequently omitted from the club’s pre-season trip to France.

He has started just the one game under Lennon in all competitions this season and although Sutton says that the Scot – who scored 40 goals during the 2015-16 campaign – is a ‘brilliant finisher’, he has major concerns over the player’s physical condition.

He said on BT Sport: “I am a huge, huge fan of Griffiths as a player. I’m not a huge fan of his attitude. He is a brilliant finisher but he is overweight, he is out of shape, and he can’t play for 60 minutes let alone 90 minutes. He’s a professional footballer, he’s not been picked for a reason.”

It’s been a difficult couple of years for Griffiths, who missed the second half of the 2018-19 campaign due to personal issues.

When fit, he is absolutely an asset for Celtic and his goal in the Europa League last night proves as much.

But whether Lennon can keep him fit and firing all season long is another question entirely.
