Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard scored his 175th Premier League goal.
Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard didn’t believe matching Arsenal idol Thierry Henry’s goal scoring record was possible before achieving the feat during the 1-0 win over Leicester City.
The former Chelsea man has long been a Premier League role model, renowned for arriving late in the box and scoring a number of wonderful goals.
However, after departing the Blues for New York City in the summer many presumed that Henry’s 175-goal record wouldn’t be matched until the Citizens brought him back in a shock six-month loan deal.
Since joining Pellegrini’s side, Lampard has been among the goals and his latest winner in the 1-0 win over Leicester City took his overall league tally to 175 goals, matching Henry.
“I’m very happy with it, I thought it was going to be out of my reach,” Lampard told the BBC after the match.
“I have respect for Henry, he is one of the greatest in Premier League history and to be up there with him his incredible.”
While leading the line for the Gunners, Henry reached the landmark playing a total of 254 league matches over eight seasons before opting to join Barcelona in the summer of 2007.
Lampard, in contrast, is playing in his 19th Premier League season and begun his goal-scoring antics as a teenager plying his trade at East London outfit West Ham United.
His deal at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire in January 2015, but given his impact on City’s side in recent weeks it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Premier League title challengers attempt to extend his stay.
