Tim Sherwood said on The Weekend Preview that Gareth Bale is not playing regularly for Tottenham Hotspur because he will not do what Steven Bergwijn does.
Bale has struggled for playing time for Spurs since his move to the North London club on loan from Spanish and European giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2020.
According to WhoScored, the 31-year-old winger has made one start and two substitute appearances in the Premier League and has played six times in the Europa League for Spurs so far this season.
As for Bergwijn, the 23-year-old Netherlands international winger has established himself as an important player in the Spurs team and was playing as a right-back at one point against Arsenal in the North London derby last weekend.
According to WhoScored, the youngster has made four starts and three substitute appearances in the Premier League and has made one start and three substitute appearances in the Europa League.
Sherwood said on The Weekend Preview: “Gareth Bale can’t get in the team at the moment because he is not prepared to go and play at right-back, whereas Bergwijn is, he would do that shift.”
Good option for Jose Mourinho
Tottenham have emerged as genuine challengers for the Premier League title despite Bale not playing regularly.
The winger is a very good player who is a brilliant option to have for head coach Mourinho. Bale could have a big role to play for Tottenham in the business end of the season.
