Darren Bent has said on talkSPORT (7:27pm, May 30, 2021) that reported Tottenham Hotspur target Mauricio Pochettino is not an elite manager.

The former Tottenham striker has pointed out that Pochettino could not win the French league, but Thomas Tuchel led Chelsea to Champions League success.

Pochettino has been strongly linked with a return to Spurs.

The Sun has claimed that the Argentine is keen on coming back to Tottenham, while Goal has reported that he has asked PSG to cancel his contract with Spurs and Real Madrid interested in securing his services.

Bent said on talkSPORT (7:27pm, May 30, 2021): “This is my issue because, and I have this argument all the time about Pochettino and people say he is an elite manager and I say that he is not.

“Well, you look at the time that he has been at PSG, he has had more than enough time to win the French league, you have to say with the squad that he has got. You look at the impact Thomas Tuchel has had at Chelsea since Frank Lampard got the sack and obviously he came in.

“They have gone on to win the Champions League and Pochettino has failed to win the French league. I think that kind of tells you in terms of elite manager where Pochettino is.”

Is Darren Bent right?

Pochettino is a very good manager, but Bent is right. The Argentine is not among the elite, well, not yet anyway.

True, Pochettino was superb when he was in charge of Tottenham, but he did not win any major trophy with them and also failed to win Ligue 1 or the Champions League with PSG.

Of course, it is not easy to win trophies with Spurs, especially when you have clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester City as your rivals, but not winning Ligue 1 is a disappointment.

Now, you could argue that Pochettino was appointed as the PSG boss only in January 2021, but as Bent says, there was still enough time for him to guide the team to success.

Remember, PSG have a certain Kylian Mbappe in their team. Oh, there’s also Neymar.

However, Spurs fans are unlikely to care if Pochettino is elite or not as long he returns to the club this summer.
