‘He is coaching’: Arsenal told £12m player ‘manages the game from the touchline’ like Mikel Arteta

Charles Watts has praised the influence Jorginho has had at Arsenal following his January transfer from Chelsea.

Mikel Arteta eat your heart out, but according to Watts, there is another individual ‘managing the game from the touchline’ and that’s Jorginho.

The Arsenal expert added that the 31-year-old is ‘coaching’ his teammates when he isn’t starting and he is someone players look up to away from the cameras, as he told Inside Arsenal.

Whenever a Chelsea player swaps Stamford Bridge for the Emirates, there is always a big talking point and that was the case with Jorginho in the winter following his £12 million move (Sky Sports).

Unfortunately for him, his debut for Arsenal began with a defeat at Everton’s Goodison Park, but he did score that memorable last-minute winner at Aston Villa.

The manner in which the Gunners lost the Premier League title last season will still be hurting fans, but this is where the players will want to put it right, with Watts sharing his thoughts on what Jorginho is like.

Jorginho, the coach

“What he does off the pitch,” said Watts. “The way he is in training. The way players look up to him. The leadership qualities he has. You see him on the touchline when he is a substitute. A lot of players who are substitutes will just be sulking around.

“You see Jorginho, he almost manages the game from the touchline when he is doing the warm-ups. You can see the way he is coaching players. Coaching his teammates. Always one of the first players on the pitch to celebrate a goal. He is such a team player.”

Arsenal squad depth

After the international break, the games are going to come in thick and fast, including that much-awaited return to the big time and the Champions League.

That’s where Arsenal’s squad depth is going to be tested to the limit and it’s where the likes of Jorginho come into the picture.

The Italy international is fully aware that he isn’t a regular starter, but that doesn’t mean he won’t play in the big games because they will come around on a weekly basis when club football returns.
