Jamie Carragher told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (06/04/21 at 9:55 pm) that Jurgen Klopp looked ‘aghast’ and ‘shocked’ during his interview after Liverpool’s defeat in Madrid.

Many were backing Liverpool to earn a positive result against the La Liga giants, but instead, they were 2-0 down inside 45 minutes and making tactical substitutions before they could get back into the dressing room.

It was an abject first-half display from Liverpool and walking away with a 3-1 defeat seems pretty kind considering how things were after 36 minutes.

And whilst Carragher slated Liverpool’s first-half display, he shared what he noticed about Klopp after his post-match interview on Tuesday.

“I think you have seen Jurgen Klopp’s interview, he is almost aghast and shocked when you see him there because of the first-half performance,” said Carragher.

“I think the second half is what we expected. It was a 50-50 game. Liverpool had bits and bobs going forward. Getting a goal. Nearly getting another. Real Madrid going over at the other end. I expected that over 90 minutes.

“What I would say is that tactically, we talk about this Real Madrid team being old and Liverpool haven’t the legs to press them, be all over them and stop them playing.

“Real Madrid played a lot of long balls or long passes. The first goal was the perfect example, it was a great long pass. If you want to beat a teams pressing, you play long – and that’s a great tactic from the manager.”

Next up for Liverpool is Aston Villa which will bring up the inevitable and the reverse fixture which saw the champions smashed 7-2.

Even though Liverpool got destroyed on that remarkable evening at Villa Park, many would love to go back to that day because that’s when both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez were fit.

And how the Merseyside giants have missed them!
