Liverpool fans were loving Emiliano Martinez’s antics during Aston Villa’s 1-0 win at Manchester United on Saturday
Bruno Fernandes doesn’t miss many penalties, but it seemed as though Villa’s number one shot stop-stopper got into his head at Old Trafford.
After Korney Hause put Villa ahead with minutes left on the clock, the very same player was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area in stoppage-time.
A penalty was awarded and many thought that Cristiano Ronaldo was going to step up to take the spot-kick.
What Liverpool supporters loved is Martinez was asking Ronaldo to take Man United’s penalty, instead of their regular taker.
Despite the mind games from Villa’s man between the sticks, and he has previous, Fernandes stepped up and blazed his penalty well over the bar. Well, well, well over.
The £17 million player (BBC Sport) then topped it all off by providing a little dance to the supporters behind the goal and Liverpool fans were in hysterics at what they were seeing.
What will only disappoint the Liverpool fans is that they didn’t make most of the dropped points from their title rivals.
With Chelsea losing 1-0 to Manchester City at Saturday lunchtime, the chance was there for Jurgen Klopp’s men to claim a valuable three points hours later against Brentford.
But they were involved in their own drama, as they recorded a 3-3 draw and are currently sitting top of the Premier League table.
What’s remarkable is that Brighton, who take on bitter rivals Crystal Palace on Monday night, can sit top of the table if they secure all three points.
Nonetheless, here is a selection of Liverpool fans reacting to Martinez’s antics from the weekend:
