Jose Enrique has called for Liverpool to part ways with Joel Matip this summer and bring in a ‘younger’ centre-back instead.

Liverpool suffered many issues last season, which resulted in them finishing outside of the top four, with their main problem being the fact that their defence and midfield declined.

Previously, it has won the Premier League title and the European Cup, that’s why Enrique views Joel Matip as a ‘legend’, but he thinks it’s now time to move on, as he posted via his Instagram story.

Some would argue that Jurgen Klopp is better off pushing Ibrahima Konate, if he can stay out of the treatment room, as the main man beside Virgil van Dijk.

And you couldn’t argue against that because the France international has been outstanding, whilst the 31-year-old Matip has started to, in the final year of his contract, slide down the other side.

That’s probably why Enrique wants the £100k-a-week star sold (Spotrac), as he explained below.

“I believe he is a legend,” said Enrique. “But it’s time for him to go and bring in a younger centre-back.”

Matip will end up leaving for free

It has been the norm for Liverpool, they don’t sell many players, which has been one of their issues under Klopp.

Gini Wijnaldum, Divock Origi, Naby Keita, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana, to name a few, all left for nothing, and in truth, it’s not good business.

For most of them, they were simply not good enough to start for Liverpool on a regular basis, but rather than making the ruthless call by selling them, the club waited until their contracts ran down before bringing someone in.
