Everton fans have taken to Twitter to react after James Rodriguez posted a tweet during the 1-0 loss to Aston Villa at Goodison Park earlier today.

What’s the story?

Well, Everton suffered their third Premier League defeat in a row against Steven Gerrard’s side in the early kick-off.

To rub salt in the wounds, Rodriguez – who left Everton back in September – inadvertently posted a tweet which initially looked like a dig at the Toffees.

Towards the latter stages of the match, the Colombian tweeted “bye bye blue” as Everton headed for defeat under Duncan Ferguson.

You can see Rodriguez’s tweet in full below.

The truth behind the post is far less controversial.

Rodriguez was actually speaking about his hair. It had been dyed blue in recent weeks, although the 30-year-old has now ditched the bold hairstyle.

Nevertheless, the timing of his tweet couldn’t have been better, as it set Everton fans off in their hundreds as they got the wrong end of the stick.

Defeat to Aston Villa should concern Everton

Whoever Bill Kenwright or Farhad Moshiri appoint to replace Rafa Benitez should probably prepare themselves for a relegation battle.

As things stand, the Toffees find themselves just five points off the bottom three.

Norwich also beat Watford 3-0 on Friday evening, which saw them move to within just three points of Everton.

Given how bad the Canaries have been this season, that reflects awfully on the Merseysiders.

It’s unbelievable to see such a sharp decline at Goodison Park, especially as Moshiri has invested millions into the playing staff.

Unfortunately, the money has been spent atrociously – for example, the signings of Alex Iwobi for £34m, Yannick Bolasie for £30m and Gylfi Sigurdsson for £45m were disastrous decisions.

For now, let’s see what the Everton fans on Twitter have been saying about Rodriguez’s tweet…
