Ian Wright was critical of Joe Gomez’s defending during Liverpool’s 2-1 FA Cup win over Norwich City at Anfield on Wednesday night, as he told ITV Sport.
Even though Liverpool opened up a comfortable 2-0 lead against Dean Smith’s side in the first half, the last 15 minutes were nervy with Lukas Rupp thumping in an effort from the edge of the area.
During that passage of play, Liverpool should have stopped the ball from being fed to Rupp and then Gomez didn’t get out to try and stop him from shooting.
From the Englishman’s perspective, he hasn’t played too much, so it’s understandable why he was rusty.
But he is playing for one of England’s top sides and this is what Wright had to say about it him.
“I think he has got to come out,” said Wright. “He’s had to come out and block that. He has to do more.
“Gomez has found himself in a great position. It could have happened in the first half. The pass into him (Rupp) is perfect, but the defender is dropping off.”

It’s going to be interesting what happens with Gomez at the end of the season and whether the 24-year-old departs in the summer.
Prior to his long-term injury, he could have argued that he was the regular alongside Virgil van Dijk.
But that one unfortunate moment at St George’s Park over a year ago has resulted in him now falling well down the pecking order at Anfield.
Joel Matip is the man who partners Van Dijk now, whilst Liverpool’s summer signing, Ibrahima Konate, has impressed immensely and is now also ahead of Gomez.
