Alan Pardew has been reflecting on Manchester United’s defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, and he has named a midfielder who has to start more often than he does under manager Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United took on Manchester City in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium this past weekend. Just as most of us expected, United lost the Premier League game.
It was not an embarrassing scoreline, though. City, who are aiming to win the Premier League title for the fourth season in a row, won 3-1 and had to come from behind to pick up all three points from the encounter.
Scott McTominay started the match for the Red Devils. He played for the entire 90 minutes.
It was the 27-year-old Scotland international midfielder’s 13th start in the Premier League this season. McTominay has made a further 11 substitute appearances in the league. He has scored seven goals and given one assist.

Former Newcastle United and West Ham United manager Alan Pardew thinks that McTominay deserves to play more often than he does.
Pardew said about McTominay on talkSPORT (6:58 pm, March 3, 2024): “McTominay, for me, I like him. Somewhere in that team, I think he has got to find a place.
“Nail your flag, to that kid. You can’t keep on taking him out, putting him in, taking him out, putting him in. He is Man United through and through, that kid.
“He doesn’t really get the respect that he deserves at that football club, in my opinion. Well, not that football club, that’s unfair, in terms of his starting stats.”
My View: Scott McTominay is an important player for Manchester United
In my opinion, Scott McTominay is a very important player for Manchester United. While the midfielder is not world-class and will always have to fight for his place in the starting lineup at Old Trafford under any manager, I think that he is a very good option to have in the squad.
McTominay is a very dynamic midfielder who can hold his own in the middle of the park and can play a very good supporting role. I do not think that he is a ‘leader’, but I believe that the Scotland international always works hard.
The midfielder has also played as an attacking midfielder for United this season and has scored important goals for Scotland, which shows another aspect of his game.
